Jessica Buckley, Director:
"Safety to me is the safety of my fellow team members and contractors. Everybody has a right to work in a safe space and to ensure that, at the end of the day, they get home to loved ones. At M+J, we have made it a part of our day-to-day, so it is now just a norm. Safety Month is a great time to highlight how far we have come from where we were 18 months ago. It’s also a great time to remind each other about the 'why,' and that’s to look out for each other."
October marks National Safe Work Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of workplace safety across Australia. At M+J Builders, safety isn't just a priority—it's at the core of everything we do. This month gives us a moment to reflect on how we incorporate safety practices into all our job sites and to celebrate the steps we take daily to ensure every team member goes home safely.
At M+J Builders, safety is integrated into every phase of our projects. From initial planning to execution, we follow strict protocols and processes that ensure the well-being of all personnel. Whether it’s our team members or subcontractors, we ensure that everyone on-site understands and adheres to our safety standards. We prioritise thorough site inspections, risk assessments, and regular safety briefings that keep everyone informed and aligned with the project’s safety requirements.
Glen O’Brien, HSE Manager:
‘’Safety means we all go home to our family and friends every day. Through demonstrating genuine care and concern for our employees, subcontractors, and others' health, safety, and wellbeing who may be affected by our operations, we have an opportunity during National Safe Work Month to raise awareness of the importance of working safely and looking out for each other's wellbeing.’’
Our commitment to safety extends beyond our immediate team. We collaborate closely with all our subcontractors to ensure they understand and follow the same high standards of safety we uphold. Before any project begins, we provide clear guidelines and conduct safety briefings to make sure that every individual working on our sites is fully aware of the procedures. This shared responsibility is key to maintaining a safe work environment across all our projects.
Safety is a long-term investment at M+J Builders, and it’s one we take seriously. We regularly invest in training programs, and equipment to ensure our teams are equipped to handle the risks they may face on the job. This investment not only reduces incidents but also increases efficiency and peace of mind on-site.
Our Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Team plays a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of these safety measures. The HSE team is constantly reviewing our procedures, conducting audits, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Their work ensures that safety is a dynamic and evolving aspect of our business.
Kalliopi Kalitsis, HSE Advisor:
‘’ Safety for me in M+J Builders isn’t just being safe in the workplace, it’s a value and work ethic that we have taken on as a team, to ensure that we all go home the same way we came to work, if not better. Safety at M+J is a community we have fostered for the best assurance to our staff and clients. Safety has given me, and our company more opportunities than we could have ever imagined.’’
For us, safety is not just about checking boxes—it’s about fostering a proactive safety culture. Each job site follows a detailed safety plan, including hazard identification, risk management, and emergency preparedness protocols. We empower our team members to speak up and report potential hazards, no matter how small, ensuring that every concern is addressed before it becomes an issue.
Michael Buckley, Director:
‘’As the director of M+J Builders, safety is personal for me. I started the company in 2012, and back then, safety wasn’t given the attention it deserved in the construction industry. Over the years, I’ve seen how important it is to make safety the foundation of everything we do. For me, as someone with a family, safety is about making sure that every person on our team—whether they’re in the office, on-site, or one of our subcontractors—gets home safely to their loved ones. At M+J Builders, we’re more than just a company; we’re a family, and that’s why safety is non-negotiable.’’
National Safe Work Month is a time to reflect, but it’s also a time to express gratitude to our teams who make safety a priority every day. Their vigilance, commitment, and teamwork are what make our work successful and safe. To every member of the M+J Builders team, and to our valued subcontractors, thank you for your dedication to keeping safety front and centre in everything we do.
Sonia Malady, General Manager:
‘’Safety First, always. For myself as a General Manager in the construction industry, safety means more than compliance, it's about protecting people, managing risks, ensuring productivity, and building trust. From legal standards to fostering a safety-first culture, it’s the foundation of sustainable success. Safe teams = Strong projects.’’
As we continue to grow and take on new projects, our focus will always remain on safety first. Because at the end of the day, no job is more important than the health and safety of our people.
Zac Garrett, Construction Manager:
‘’Safety means that we all get home safely after every day of work. That is a right. M+J Builders are continuing to implement new strategies and procedures through the delivery of our projects to ensure we comply with regulations. This approach is continued through the office, and there is genuine care from the leaders of the team to ensure our employees and subbies are well outside of work. While we continue to learn, we may not necessarily change what we do in everyday life, but I think it gives us the opportunity to be more aware of situations and outcomes. This is a great time to reflect on our journey and to look into the future to further develop. While we don’t generally give too much consideration to safety and how it affects our lives, it is extremely important, and if we get it wrong, the effects could be devastating.’’
Brooke Burns, HSE Advisor:
"Safety has been the foundation of my journey in construction. As an HSE advisor, it’s not just about following rules—it’s about protecting lives and creating a culture where everyone feels confident, they’ll go home safe at the end of the day. At M+J Builders, safety is more than a checklist; it’s the heart of how we operate, from the ground up. We’ve built a culture of accountability and care, where every project is an opportunity to reinforce that safety comes first."
M+J Builders acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which it is based, the Larrakia People, and pays respect to the Elders – past, present and emerging.
